Olympus Trials

The Olympus planning System has been trialed by many areas of the armed forces both in the UK and abroad. The system is usually

JWID

Over the past four years the Olympus Planning System has been deployed at JWID. It has been nominated for pull through funding twice and received a JWID silver award in 2002.

At JWID the system is fully integrated into the Coalition WAN (CWAN) and provides distributed plans and situational awareness.

Some of the areas that Olympus has covered at JWID are:

  • Operational Picture Interface
  • Land Component Commander (LCC); plans & current situation
  • ACO Compiler

Exercise Saif Sareea 2

The Olympus Planning System was deployed to Saif Sareea as part of the Exercise Control (EXCON) management system.

The system was used to maintain the current blue forces picture and distribute this information via an interactive web interface to over 200 exercise management machines.

Command & Control Development Centre (C2DC)

A version of the Olympus Planning System lives with C2DC at Warminster. They are responsible for doctrine development and are looking at the birdtable (eBT,ebird) as an adjunct to BOWMAN within the headquarters.

DERA, DSTL & QinetiQ

The Olympus Planning system has been evaluated and used in exercises by all three agencies.

The system has shown its compatibility with the BOWMAN infrastructure using the QinetiQ BOWMAN emulator at a low bandwidth(9.6 KBaud) and has been demonstrated over the HF comms of a naval ship by DSTL.

The Human sciences groups at the agencies are very interested in the HCI of the Olympus system and have shown the systems intuitive user interface to produce a high SUMI score.

1 Mech Bde

1 Mech Bde trialed the smaller display component of the Olympus system. Ultrascribes were placed in the back of Armoured Personnel Carriers on Salisbury Plain and were connected into the 1 Mech wireless network.

1 Mech then drew up a set of plans using standard military planning methodology and then demonstrated their end product to Gen Sir Michael Jackson.

Exercise Aurora

The Olympus Planning System was deployed on-board HMS Albion with 3 Cdo Bde during Exercise Aurora. It was the first time that the software was used in the littoral zone with both naval charts and land maps.

The system had the capability to import and export information from CSS and successfully exported data to the coalition ship USS Nassau.

The trial proved a success and the trial report showed that the system reduced the time take to plan by a third.

NITEworks

The Olympus system was used in the NITEworks Indirect Fire Integration (IFI) exercise. The system was network connected and passed live data between itself and the battle management system using standard military messaging formats (ADAT-P3, USMTF, OTHT-G).

The Olympus system served two functions:

  • Air Coordination between JFAC and OSG
  • General Situational Awareness

The exercise proved a success and the redeployment of the same equipment is expected for the second IFI exercise.

3 (UK) Div

After 3 Div had used the eBT component of the Olympus Planning system at the NITEworks experiment they asked us to bring it to their headquarters for demonstration to the staff collage.

The eBT was deployed in the units forward headquarters and was demonstrated as part of the headquarters future capability.
