The Olympus Planning System
has recently been deployed on HMS Albion as part of the ship fit for Exercise
Aurora.
As part of the exercise 3 Commando used the system to
plan littoral operations. The aim of the trial installation was to see
if such a system would be of use to the commandos and to see how the system
would improve tempo and the planning process.
This was the first time that the system had combined
its land based mapping with its naval charting. The system also had an
interface with CSS so that plans could be transmitted around the ship
and out to other platforms (plans were successfully sent to USS Nassau
to prove the systems interoperability).
The system successfully completed the exercise and the
users reported that they found that it cut the planning process from 12
hours down to 8 hours. They said that this improvement in tempo meant
that they had more time to wargame the scenario and come up with alternative
courses of action.
