Ultra were contracted to design, develop and manufacture 18 off Initial Phase SMCS Systems which are now in service and supported by the current PDS contract. A further contract to develop and manufacture 7 further systems was placed and these are now in service and supported by the current PDS contract.

SMCS Initial Phase includes three System Cabinets, two of which each house a Central Services Node (CSN) and Input/Output Node (ION). The ION provides external interfaces to 1553, FSE, SAMHADS and DCM weapons equipment. The CSN processes the data received and transmitted across these interfaces.

Man Machine Interfaces (MMI) are provided by four Multi Function Consoles, a Main Tactical Display and two Remote Terminals. The MMI nodes communicate with each other and the System Cabinet nodes by means of a dual redundant fibre optic LAN.

SMCS Systems are fitted to Vanguard Class and S & T Class submarines.
